Documentation Conventions
-------------------------
This manual uses the conventions described below. These conventions are
used to emphasize text (typographic conventions), to describe how to
enter information (user input) with the keyboard, and to describe how the
computer responds to user input (video display).
The typographic conventions used in this manual are described below:
quotations Information that you must type appears in quotations.
angle brackets Variables, such as <description>, appear in angle
brackets. You must substitute this string with an
appropriate value; for example, for <description>, you
have to substitute an actual description.
The conventions used to describe user input follow:
o When you enter information, you can use any combination of
upper-case and lower-case letters.
o The term <Enter> means that you have to press the <Enter> key.
o The term select a menu option means that you have to highlight
the option using the Up-arrow key, Down-arrow key, or Space Bar
and press the <Enter> key.
o The term menu field or field indicates a field within a menu
option that is preceded by a colon and where you can type
information.

1. INTRODUCTION
The CompuServe Service for NetWare MHS (MHS 1.5C) software connects your
network to the CompuServe MHS Hub Service.
If your company has a CompuServe account, you can use the CompuServe MHS Hub
Service for internal communication, and for communication with other companies
that have CompuServe accounts. The service can reduce long distance costs for
both internal and external communication, and it can improve security.
If your company has many remote offices, or if you communicate with other
companies at remote locations, the CompuServe Hub Service can reduce your
communication costs. A CompuServe subscription fee gives your company access
to the local CompuServe number. When a user at your company sends mail to a
remote location, your MHS host dials the local number and routes the mail to
CompuServe. The receiving MHS host dials its local CompuServe number, and
retrieves the mail. No long-distance calls are necessary.
Providing other companies with direct dial-in access to your MHS host may
present a security threat. If you use the CompuServe MHS Hub Service, you can
restrict access to internal MHS hosts. Mail to and from other companies will
be routed through CompuServe.
This chapter explains some of the terminology used in this manual, and provides
sample configurations.
1.1. TERMINOLOGY
----------------
Before you connect to CompuServe, you should be familiar with the terms defined
in the NetWare MHS Installation and Operation guide. This document uses
additional terms, which are defined below.
CompuServe preferred hub
In the MHS Directory, you can define a preferred hub, to which the
MHS will deliver messages for workgroups that are not defined in the
MHS Directory. Similarly, you can define a preferred hub when you
register a host with CompuServe; when CompuServe receives mail
addressed to an unregistered workgroup, Compuserve will forward it
to the preferred hub. The preferred hub can resolve the address and
deliver the message.
Figure 1-1 illustrates a CompuServe preferred hub. The workgroups
NHUB and Acme are registered with CompuServe, but Ace is not; it
connects to the network through NHUB. The Acme workgroup
administrator has selected NHUB as the CompuServe preferred hub.
Therefore, when a user at Acme sends mail to Ace, CompuServe
forwards the message to NHUB. NHUB delivers the mail to Ace during
the next communication session.

+---------+ +---------+
Figure 1-1: CompuServe Preferred Hub
The administrator of the NHUB workgroup can choose whether to
provide preferred hub services for Acme. If the administrator
chooses not to, Acme must connect to Ace directly.
Default route
When CompuServe receives mail addressed to a workgroup, CompuServe
delivers it to the default route for the workgroup. The default
route is usually the workgroup-wide router, but it can be another
host that will forward messages to the workgroup-wide router.
For example, a user at the host ATLANTA in the workgroup Novell
sends a message to "JSmith @ Novell." The message is forwarded to
NHUB, the default route for Novell, shown in Figure 1-2. NHUB has a
user route for JSmith that indicates he is at CHICAGO, which
communicates with NHUB through CompuServe. NHUB includes the
routing information in the address of the message, and forwards the
message to CompuServe. CHICAGO will pick it up the next time it
connects to CompuServe.

1.2 CONFIGURATIONS
------------------
How you use the CompuServe MHS Hub service determines the configuration
you will use. You can use CompuServe to:
o exchange messages between hosts within your workgroup, as
illustrated in Figure 1-3.

1.2.1 Intra-workgroup Messaging
-------------------------------
You can use CompuServe to exchange messages with other hosts in your
workgroup. Each host in your workgroup can connect to the network in
one of the following ways:
o Directly, through CompuServe. Host1 and Host2 in Figure 1-5 connect
to CompuServe directly.

Figure 1-6: Connection Via Another Host
For each host in the workgroup, define the workgroup-wide router as the
CompuServe default route. If you wish to define a CompuServe preferred
hub for each host, select the workgroup-wide router or a host that
provides routing services for the workgroups with which your users will
communicate.
For each host that connects to CompuServe directly: install NetWare MHS
1.5C; register the host with CompuServe; and define CompuServe as that
host's MHS preferred hub.
1.2.2 Inter-workgroup Messaging
-------------------------------
If you are using CompuServe to exchange messages between workgroups, you
may choose to configure your MHS network in one of the following ways:
o Only the workgroup-wide router connects to CompuServe (see Figure
1-7). In this configuration, only the workgroup-wide router must
have MHS 1.5C installed.
For this configuration, define CompuServe as the MHS preferred hub
on the workgroup-wide router. Mail addressed to workgroups not
defined in your MHS network is forwarded to CompuServe for
routing. If the destination workgroup is not defined in the
CompuServe routing tables, the message is forwarded to the
CompuServe preferred hub selected for your workgroup.

Figure 1-8: Multiple-host Connection
o None of the hosts in the workgroup connects to CompuServe directly;
the workgroup connects to CompuServe remotely (through another
workgroup). Workgroups without a direct connection to CompuServe
are called remote workgroups. Wkgp3 in Figure 1-9 is a remote
workgroup that connects to CompuServe through Host1 in Wkgp1.

Figure 1-9: Remote Connection
When a user at Wkgp3 sends mail to JSmith @ Wkgp1, Host4 delivers
the mail to Host1 in Wkgp1. Host1, the workgroup-wide router, has a
user route for JSmith at Host2. Host1 adds the routing information
to the message address, and forwards the message to CompuServe.
CompuServe delivers the message to Host2.
1.3 MESSAGE TRANSFER AND DELIVERY
---------------------------------
A user in Wkgp1 sends mail to BJones @ Wkgp2.
1. The electronic mail application places the message in the
\MHS\MAIL\SND directory.
2. The Connectivity Manager picks it up, and checks the MHS Directory
to find out where to route mail for Wkgp2. The Directory indicates
that mail for Wkgp2 is routed through CompuServe.
3. During its next scheduled call to CompuServe, Wkgp1 delivers the
message.
The host must call CompuServe, since CompuServe will not call the
host.
4. CompuServe checks its routing tables to find out the default route
for Wkgp2. It queues the message for the default route.
5. Next time the default route calls CompuServe, it retrieves the
message.
2. CONNECTING TO COMPUSERVE
This chapter explains how to connect a workgroup to CompuServe. Follow
these steps for each workgroup that will connect to CompuServe:
1. On each host that will connect to CompuServe, install NetWare MHS
1.5C (CompuServe Service for NetWare MHS). Using the MHS Directory
Manager, define the hosts and workgroups in your MHS environment.
Refer to the NetWare MHS Installation and Operations guide for
detailed instructions.
2. Set up your CompuServe Account.
3. Log in to CompuServe, and register your workgroup, the default
route and (optionally) the CompuServe preferred hub.
4. Register hosts that connect to CompuServe directly.
5. Register any workgroups that will communicate with CompuServe
via your workgroup.
6. In the MHS Directory Manager, define the CompuServe hub.
Table 2-1 summarizes the procedures performed at the MHS host, and
the procedures performed while logged in to CompuServe.

2.1 SETTING UP YOUR COMPUSERVE ACCOUNT
--------------------------------------
Before you can connect to CompuServe, you must obtain a CompuServe
account. Follow the instructions in your CompuServe IntroPak or
membership booklet. Along with your account, CompuServe provides you
with:
o The name of the data network you will use to access CompuServe.
(A data network is a service you call, such as SprintNet or BT North
America, that links you to CompuServe's network in locations where
CompuServe does not provide direct local service.) MHS can connect
to CompuServe through the following data networks:
- CompuServe network
- SprintNet (formerly Telenet)
- BT North America (formerly BT TYMNET)
- DataPac
- Infonet (formerly Computer Science Corporation)
- LATA
o The local telephone number(s) MHS will dial to access CompuServe.
o A User ID and password for each host that will connect to
CompuServe.
In addition to this information, you will need network-related
parameters. Parameters for the data networks listed above are provided
in data network login scripts shipped with MHS 1.5C. If you are using a
different data network, or you are not sure which data network you are
using, contact CompuServe Customer Support. Table 2-2 contains a list
of Support numbers.

5. MHSADMIN prompts, 'Enter the workgroup name.' Enter a name of up to
eight characters. The name may include numbers, letters, or the
hyphen (-), dollar sign ($), or number sign (#). It is validated
against the list of existing workgroup names. If the name is
already in use, MHSADMIN asks you to choose a different workgroup
name.
A workgroup name may be in use even if it does not appear in the
directory list. If your company name is already in use, contact
CompuServe. It may have been defined by another administrator.
6. MHSADMIN prompts, 'Enter the workgroup description.' Enter a
description of up to 40 characters. If you prefer not to enter a
workgroup description, press <Enter>.
7. MHSADMIN prompts, 'Do you want this workgroup to be listed in the
directory?' The Workgroup Directory lists workgroups registered with
CompuServe (except for unlisted, or private, ones). To include your
workgroup in the directory, enter "Y"; otherwise, enter "N."
8. MHSADMIN tells you that you must define a default route and
displays the prompt,
The default route to reach users in workgroup <name> is:
1 A host in the workgroup <name>
2 A host in another workgroup
Enter "1" to choose a host in this workgroup as the default route.
9. MHSADMIN prompts you to 'Enter a default host name for workgroup
<name>.' Enter the name of a host to which mail addressed to your
workgroup will be forwarded. Usually, this host will be the
workgroup-wide router.
10. MHSADMIN prompts, 'Enter host name description.' Enter a description
of up to 40 characters.
11. MHSADMIN prompts, 'Enter User ID which will be used by this host.'
Enter the User ID the default host will use to log on to CompuServe.
12. MHSADMIN prompts, 'Do you want a preferred hub for senders in your
workgroup?' Enter "Y" if you want to use a host in your workgroup as
the CompuServe preferred hub. (If you want to use a host in another
workgroup, make sure that workgroup has already been defined.) Enter
"Y" if you are not registering all the workgroups with which your
users communicate.
Enter "N" if you do not want a CompuServe preferred hub. Messages
addressed to unregistered workgroups will be returned to the sender.
Registration is complete.
13. If you answered "Y" in the previous step, MHSADMIN prompts you to
identify the preferred hub:
The preferred hub for workgroup <name> should be:
1 A host in the workgroup <name>
2 A host in another workgroup
Enter "1" to choose a host in this workgroup. When MHSADMIN prompts
for the name of the host, enter the host name. Usually this host
will be the workgroup-wide router. This host or its MHS preferred
hub must have routes for the workgroups that are not registered with
CompuServe. If the host has not been registered, CompuServe prompts
you to register it.
Enter "2" to choose a host in another workgroup. When MHSADMIN
prompts for the name of the workgroup, enter the name of a
registered workgroup. When MHSADMIN prompts for the name of the
host, enter the name of a host registered at the selected workgroup.
After you have defined the preferred hub, the message 'Workgroup
registration complete pending approval by CompuServe' is displayed.
Approval may take up to 72 hours.
When you return to the MHSADMIN Menu, you will notice that it has
changed:

MHSADMIN Main Menu. If the message Confirmation Pending is displayed,
the workgroup has not yet been approved. You will receive no other
notification.
2.4 REGISTERING ADDITIONAL HOSTS
--------------------------------
If you are using the CompuServe connection for communication within your
workgroup, you must register each host that connects to CompuServe
directly.
If you are using the CompuServe connection for inter-workgroup
communication, you can choose to route mail through one host, usually
the workgroup-wide router. If you choose this option, you do not need
to register additional hosts.
Or, you can allow other hosts in your workgroup to connect to CompuServe
directly. If you choose this option, you must register each host that
does so.
2.4.1 Registration Strategies
-----------------------------
You can use two strategies for registering hosts, a centralized or a
decentralized strategy. The strategy you choose will determine how the
work load is distributed between the workgroup and host administrators.
Choose a centralized strategy if you want the workgroup administrator to
coordinate the whole network. Choose a decentralized strategy to grant
some independence to the host administrators.
In a centralized strategy, the workgroup administrator registers all
workgroups and hosts. If you use this strategy, host administrators do
not need to learn how to use the CompuServe MHSADMIN program.
In a decentralized strategy, hosts that connect to CompuServe directly
are registered by their administrators. The workgroup administrator
must accept or reject each host registered in the workgroup, thus
retaining control over membership in the workgroup.
2.4.2 Registering Hosts (Centralized Strategy)
----------------------------------------------
If you are using a centralized strategy, the workgroup administrator
registers all hosts. If you are the workgroup administrator, follow
the procedures below to register each host that will connect to
CompuServe. Before proceeding, make sure you have a unique User ID for
each host you are registering.
1. If you are not already connected to CompuServe, follow the
instructions in the section, "Logging on to CompuServe." Then, type
"GO MHSADMIN" at the Enter Choice ! prompt and press <Enter>. The
Main Menu is displayed.

1 <name> connects directly to CompuServe
2 <name> is routed via another host in workgroup <name>
3 <name> is routed via another workgroup
If this host connects directly to CompuServe, enter "1". The
program prompts for the host's User ID. Enter the host's unique
User ID (each host connecting to CompuServe must have a different
User ID).

2.4.3 Registering Hosts (Decentralized Strategy)
------------------------------------------------
If you are using a decentralized strategy, host administrators at the
hosts that connect to CompuServe directly register their hosts. If you
are a host administrator, follow the procedures in this section to
register you host. Before proceeding, make sure you have a unique User
ID for your host. Obtain the User ID from your workgroup administrator.
1. Follow the instructions in the section, "Logging on to CompuServe."
Then, type "GO MHSADMIN" and press <Enter> at the Enter Choice !
prompt. The Main Menu is displayed.

this host is to be affiliated.' Enter the name of the workgroup to
which your host belongs. The workgroup you specify must be
registered with CompuServe.
4. MHSADMIN prompts, 'Enter the host name.' Enter the name of your
host. A host name must be unique within its workgroup, and may be
up to eight characters long. It may include numbers, letters, or
the dollar sign ($), hyphen (-) or number sign (#).
5. MHSADMIN prompts, 'Enter host name description.' If you want to
include a description for your host, enter a description of up to 40
characters. If you want to leave this field blank, press <Enter>.
6. The message 'Host registration complete, pending first logon to
the CompuServe hub by that host' is displayed. Press <Enter> to
return to the Main Menu.
Next time the workgroup administrator chooses to Change workgroup
settings, MHSADMIN will prompt Allow this host to join (Yes or No). The
workgroup administrator can choose whether to allow your host into the
workgroup.
Until the workgroup administrator accepts the registration, the message
'This host has not been approved by the workgroup administrator' will be
displayed on the Host Settings screen. Your host will not be able to
connect to CompuServe until it is approved by the workgroup
administrator.
2.5 REGISTERING REMOTE WORKGROUPS
---------------------------------
You can register remote workgroups (workgroups that do not connect to
CompuServe directly). If you do not register them, you should define a
CompuServe preferred hub to resolve mail addressed to unknown
workgroups.
1. Type "GO MHSADMIN" at the Enter Choice ! prompt and press <Enter>.
2. Type "3" and press <Enter> to Register a new workgroup.
3. MHSADMIN prompts, 'Enter the workgroup name.' Enter a name of up
to eight characters. The name may include numbers, letters, or the
hyphen (-), dollar sign ($), or number sign (#). It is validated
against the list of existing workgroup names. If the name is
already in use, MHSADMIN asks you to choose a new workgroup name.
A workgroup name may be in use even if it does not appear in the
directory list. If the name you want to define is already in use,
contact CompuServe. It may have been defined by another
administrator.
4. MHSADMIN prompts, 'Enter workgroup description.' Enter a
description of up to 40 characters. If you prefer not to enter a
workgroup description, press <Enter> at the prompt.
5. MHSADMIN prompts, 'Do you want this workgroup to be listed in the
directory?' The Workgroup Directory lists workgroups registered with
CompuServe (except for unlisted, or private ones). To include your
workgroup in the directory, enter "Y"; otherwise, enter "N".
6. MHSADMIN tells you that you must define a default route and displays
the prompt,
The default route to reach users in workgroup <name> is:
1 A host in the workgroup <name>
2 A host in another workgroup
Enter "2".
7. MHSADMIN prompts for the name of the workgroup through which this
workgroup's mail will be routed. Enter the name of a registered
workgroup.
8. MHSADMIN prompts you for the name of the host through which your
host's mail will be routed. Enter the name of a host registered at
the selected workgroup. Mail addressed to the new workgroup will be
forwarded to this host.
9. MHSADMIN prompts, 'Do you want a preferred hub for senders in your
workgroup?'
o Type "Y" and press <Enter> if you want to define a CompuServe
preferred hub for the workgroup you are registering. Choose
this option if you are not registering all the workgroups with
which your users communicate.
o Type "N" and press <Enter> if you do not want a CompuServe
preferred hub. Messages addressed to unregistered hosts will
be returned to the sender. Registration is complete.
10. If you answered "Y" in the previous step, MHSADMIN prompts,
The preferred hub for workgroup <name> should be:
1 A host in the workgroup <name>
2 A host in another workgroup
o Enter "1" to choose a host in the new workgroup. In response to
the prompt, enter the name of a host (usually this will be the
workgroup-wide router). This host or its MHS preferred hub
must have routes for all workgroups that have selected it as a
CompuServe preferred hub. If the host has not been registered,
you will be prompted to register it.
o Enter "2" to choose a host at another workgroup. In response
to the prompts, enter the name of a registered workgroup and
host. All mail for the new workgroup will be routed through
this host.
2.6 DEFINING COMPUSERVE AT THE MHS HOST

3. USING MHSADMIN
The workgroup administrator and host administrator can both use the MHS
Administration utility. However, different functions are available to
both. This chapter describes the activities available to the workgroup
and host administrators.
To use the utility, log on to CompuServe, and execute MHSADMIN by typing
"GO MHSADMIN" and pressing <Enter>.
If you log on CompuServe with the Administrator's User ID for your
workgroup, CompuServe will recognize you as the workgroup administrator.
If you use another ID, CompuServe will recognize you as a host
administrator.
The User ID used to create your workgroup automatically becomes the
Administrator's User ID. The workgroup administrator can define another
ID as the Administrator's User ID with the Change workgroup settings
option.
3.1 HOST ADMINISTRATOR OPTIONS
------------------------------
The host administrator can perform the following activities:
o Display help for the CompuServe MHS Hub Service.
o Search the MHS directory.
o Change the settings for the administered host.
o Delete the administered host.
3.2 WORKGROUP ADMINISTRATOR OPTIONS
-----------------------------------
The workgroup administrator can perform the following activities:
o Display help for the CompuServe MHS Hub Service.
o Search the MHS directory.
o Register a new workgroup (refer to Chapter 2, "Connecting to
CompuServe").

them unlisted; unlisted workgroups will not be displayed.
3.3.1 Searching by Workgroup Name
---------------------------------
If you are searching by workgroup name, enter the name you want to find.
Or, enter the first few letters of the name. For example, to search for
all workgroups whose names begin with W, enter "W."
Workgroups matching your search criteria are listed alphabetically,
along with their workgroup description. If there is more than one
screen of information, press <Enter> to display the next screen.
3.3.2 Searching by Workgroup Description
----------------------------------------
If you are searching by workgroup description, type all or part of one
or more words from the description.
Each word in the description is indexed separately. Thus if you only
know one word in the description, you can still find the workgroup.
For example, to search for all workgroup descriptions containing the
word "Company" and a word beginning with the letters "Int", enter "Int
Company".
Workgroups matching your search criteria are listed alphabetically, by
workgroup name. If there is more than one screen of information, press
<Enter> to display the next screen.
3.4 CHANGING WORKGROUP SETTINGS
